    C&CC winter rallies abroad

Has anyone ever been on one of the C&CC winter rallies, it's something we would like to do sometime (probably when retired), the thought of getting away from the British winter and going somewhere warm for several weeks appeals.

Anyone done it? What was it like? Would you recommend it?

I wasn't aware of these rallies Graham.
    Can we have a "meet"!

We have friends who have been rallying abroad with them for many years. We visited them once on the La Manga site Spain. They were there for 3 months.
Great site and you do feel very well looked after and especially in an emergency. Lots of things to do or you can just relax and do your own thing.

They escaped the cold weather and met lots of new friends.

We met a retired couple from Wales in Aranjuez (near Madrid) in October on their way down to La Manga for 6 months - they call it 'Wrinkly City' and love it.

We have just signed upto go to one of the C&CC summer rallies for the first time in France. You do not have to go for the whole time, we are just going for a week as part of a circular tour and it happened to be in an area we wanted to visit, the Jura. If you look on their website you will find some details of all the rallies and you should be able to access the brochure 'Carefree European holidays' or send off for it if you are a member.

The French meet we were going to arrange in the Spring got somewhat overlooked, as the Banbury Spring Meet took off.
Like the idea of the C+CC meets in France and love the Jura region. We enjoyed the area pre-motorhome days, we liked a pretty little village in a valley, called Baume-les-Messieurs, the Google Earth photo looks down the valley to the village.
We stayed on a campsite at Lac de Chalain, adjacent to a Naturist beach!
Maybe we could utilise one of these meets for a mini Small Motorhome Meet?

I was thinking we could do both. The Banbury Meet is at the end of April so there is still time to make use of ACSI sites in France later on in May for those who fancy a mini meet. I think there were some folk who haven't motor homed in France and liked the idea of being able to travel with those who have.

There are several sites not too far from Cherbourg which Tony found which looked suitable. Perhaps we need to now make a more definite proposal for people to consider.

This would be just the kind of encouragement we need to take the plunge! If someone organizes it we would be interested!

                    Meet in France

I would be very interested in a french meet. Especially if it was geared to first timers abroad!

Are the French ready for a Small Motorhome meet?

Great idea, i agree with everything thats been said, we keep toying with the idea but never get get round to doing anything about it, bit of a novice when it comes to camping abroad, although we did drive to casino in Italy in my old 1972 VW caravanette in 1987 to visit the family, so we would definitely be up for it.

When Tony (Anchorman) and I talked about a French Meet it was at 'the Squelch' Devon meet and we were both thinking in terms of a date and a site being decided and then everybody who wanted to come making their own travel arrangements and site bookings, a normal Meet as opposed to an arranged Rally in fact. Usually the ferry fares make it sensible to spend a week or two in France so the Meet might last a few days and then people would go their separate ways.
This scenario may not be what people were expecting if they are considering camping in France for the first time and had the impression that we were organising something especialy for them. Of course we would freely give advice on extra equipment, paperwork etc; there is already a good article by Pauline & Graham on the main website and I am sure every other seasoned traveller would chip in with good ideas. And once on site there would be the usual abundance of help with new experiences and customs. (Might have to forgo the fish & chips). But we couldn't book ferries or arrange to travel in convoy to get people used to the roads, but we could find sites that are not too far from the ports, speak English and possibly have a snack bar or restaurant.

Unfortunately, apart from my June/July holiday in France I will not be able to go again next year and I have contacted Tony and Graham who are both looking booked up until at least the middle of the year. Obviously it is open to anyone on the Forum to make suggestions for a French Meet and I hope they do, and if I can help in any way short of traveling I would be happy to do so.

I would like to encourage anyone who is worried about the driving that most people find it ceases to be noticable after about the first hour. Finding your way is a different matter and a good satnav would be my number one recommendation so you can concentrate on the road rather than worry about missing turnings. There is really more to be found out about the camping side of things, particularly electrics, gas and carnets. My second recommendation would be the Caravan Club French campsites book which tells you everything you need to know, you dont have to be a Member to buy it, it just costs more!

I hope I have cleared up any misconceptions about what Tony and I talked about and that everybody who wants to have a go at France (in the nicest possible way) will try it next year, and you will go back and back and back.

I'm quite up to leading a small convoy of folk who haven't driven in Europe before, from Cherbourg. Niloc is quite right- it is easy to drive on the right, the roads are much quieter except in the big towns.

Watch this space; Tony sussed out some reasonable sites earlier in the year and September is a possible time. It'll still be warm and we'll be able to make use of the ACSI sites - top rate per night is 16 euros plus tax. [you'll need the ACSI book -available from Vicarious Books -I'll put the website address when I can find it]
