Tannenbaum Glamping & Campsite - Belper, Derbyshire

We were away over the bank holiday weekend at Tannenbaum Campsite near Belper, Derbyshire. It’s a site we have been trying to visit for a while but for one reason and another we haven’t managed it. Although the facilities are extremely basic ( a couple of loos, no showers and no EHU) the whole site has a really lovely, friendly vibe about it and the views down the valley from the camping field are simply stunning. There is a small honesty box shop that has your essentials and the site has a large number of fire pits that are free to use (you have to bring your own fuel to burn or you can buy it from the site owners at £5 a bag). They hold themed weekends throughout the year and during our stay it was a Spanish theme. A mobile bar was on site along with Paella, Tapas and other scrummy food served in the “barn” (more of a big shed really but it was down out nicely all the same) where there was also live music.

What really makes the site is the owners who couldn’t do enough to make you feel welcome. At £11 a night it’s pretty cheap and I reckon the view alone is worth that. The facilities could be better but they are passable and I think the owners are feeding every penny they make back into the site to keep improving it. Worth noting that you can use the much nicer showers and loos over the road at the Cricket Club when its open and there is a cheap bar there as well.

In addition to the camping pitches they have 2 Bell Tents, a Yurt and a Shepherds hut glamping units for hire, all of which have their own facilities. We didn't look at them too closely as they were occupied but appeared nice from a distance.

The site is a member of the Freedom Camping Club network.

Better a rainy day on the hill than a sunny day in the office!
