I have a 4-season down-filled sleeping bag for winter use but a cheaper 3-season Mountain Equipment synthetic for use in milder weather plus a very cheap 'Argos' cotton-lined for use in hot weather.
The down is obviously the warmest and being mummy-shaped, there are no cold spots. However, down is expensive and has to be kept dry. Synthetics are more versatile and cheaper but they're also bulkier to store and not as warm as down.
You tend to get what you pay for. If your budget will stretch to down then it will be warmer, lighter and probably last 3x as long as a synthetic.

I can't stand those mummy-shaped sleeping bags - they restrict my movements to much! I have a mid range square large sleeping bag which is a winter weight. If it's cold I use it like it is, if warmer I just use it like a quilt. I also have fleece blankets in case its very cold, but have very rarely used them as the bag is ok on it's own.
