    my Romahome?

    Hello Ant
    Hope you can help me.
I purchased a van from a car dealer not a specialist. The van appeared to be a Romahome hitop. I had spent a lot of time looking for one of these. It looked good and from my research a good price. From the registration number both the dealer and myself ran auto checks and everything came back clear and the date of 1st registration being 21/03/2006. So I purchased it, I then got in touch with Romahome and quoted the construction number they said that the number related to a 1996 build. the van looks good and could easily pass for 5 years old
I did not know at the time that Romahome had finished production of the Hitop citroen c15. The stickers on the Hitop look very professional and its called The Sun Seeker with images of sun, sea, waves and a stylised boat, I wish I could send a photo but I do not know how to do this, but will try at a later date. I would appreciate any help you could give on the history of this van.
    Thanking you in anticipation, Alex

Lokks like some stuck a 1996 habitation unit onto a Citroen 2006 van and then sold it as a 2006.

Peter Holden knows about this kind of practice, maybe he'll be along to advise.

I am very sorry that you have been misled by a dealer.

To help you withyour identification, photos inside and outside would help.

Romahome last made C15 hytops in around 2000 with just a few 2002 registrations of vehicles already in dealers.

There is no real problem with the camper shell except Romahome attach them in a way that they are not meant to be removed.

There is an outside possibility that insurance could be a problem in the event of a claim as they always try to get out of everything. One way round this is to have an engineers report done on the vehicle. I had to do this a number of years ago when I built a "Jiffy" Romahome.

Dealers even though the are not specialists must have some responsibility for for selling vehicles that are not what they have described them as.

Romahome do not support the transfer of camper shells from one vehicle to another and they have insisted in the past that ll references to Romahome are removed from the shell.

      Peter

There are posts on this forum about Ebay sales of Romahomes that are wrongly described and I have spoken to several dealers who are selling this type of vehicle and their excuse is almost always that they were not aware. It has not changed the price that they have been asking.

Really though, if you like the vehicle and are satisfied that it is safe and that your insurance is correct then just get on and use it.

        Hi Alex.
You are not alone, there are many Romahome owners who have fallen foul of the body swappers. Peter is right to suggest you get it checked for saftey reasons and if all is ok enjoy it. My only concern would still be that a 2006 C15 will be a 600kg chassis and a 1996 Romahome body was built to fit a 765 Kg chassis. This means the original "Spare mass capacity" ( what you can carry in the vehicle after 75kg of driver, the weight of 90% of tanks filled, 60kg of general junk and any listed extras on the original price list weighed and subtracted from the max operating mass) has been reduced by 165 kg. Not all the spare mass could be put on the back axle so I think I'd want to load the vehicle with a reasonable camping kit and go and have the two axle weights weighed on a weigh bridge. If the back axle or indeed the gross vehicle weight is exceeded the vehicle could be deemed "not fit for purpose" and I'd return it to the dealer for a refund. If you're pulled over by VOSA during one of their summer purges on overweight vehicles they will just make you walk home if you can't get it under the limit.
Also check the tyres, not all 600kg chassis would have the commercially rated tyre needed to carry the weight.

          Thanks Peter
The story as far as I have been able to find out
A guy,who I have yet to contact, traded in the van against another motorhome
with a dealer, whom I have spoken to, he told me that he was a little unsure about the history, however, after various checks, and not misleading the buyer he sold it on for what seemed a fair price. the lady who purchased it on the 31/07/2010 found that because of her husband's illness it was unsuitable for them, so she traded in against a car with a main dealer. This dealership then passed it on as they only trade in their own vehicles. The dealer that I purchased it from sells various vehicles, and did not mislead me, as he really knew nothing about motorhomes which he told me when I purchased it.
Thanks for the info about romahome insisting that all reference to romahome be removed, this explains the new livery and answers one more question.

          Cheers Alex

I would have a question as to how the dealer worked out a selling price. If it was based on the value of a 2006 Romahome then he did mislead you. If it was worked out on the value of a 1996 Romahome then he did not. Unlike private sellers dealers do have some responsibility to trade fairly, with a private sale it is always buyer beware

              thanks for the info Ant

I will do some more research and check out the weights that you have suggested. This is not going to beat me, there must be an answer out there.
Thanks again I will let you know how I get on

                Hello Peter

Thanks for your help, I will try to post some photo's asap

The camper shell is a Romahome Hitop and all reference to Romahome has been removed with the exception of construction number on the top hinge of the stable door and the sticker by the gas taps under the sink.
The camper shell appears to have been removed and replaced well, with only overspray showing on the seal between the camper shell and the newer C15 cab.
How do I go about getting an engineer's report on the vehicle & how much should this cost?
The money that I paid for the camper was what one would expect to pay for a 1996 model, and that was why I was mystified by such a low price for what at first appeared to be a 2006 model, I thought I had a real bargain. I know that the lady who previously owned it paid £5000 more for it than I paid and she only had it for 5 months.
After the reply that I had from Ant [informative man, like to meet him.] about the Romahome built to fit a 765kg. chassis and a 2006 C15 chassis being a 600 kg. I have some concern about what I can carry, IT will have to be lightweight camping, however, I am familiar with that.
Changes some of the ideas I had for the camper though, but I am not too upset there must be a way of sorting this out, and yes I am still pleased with my camper which I now know is a Romahome in disguise.
Another question this brings up- will I be expelled from the Romaclub

                Cheers Alex

There must be ways of uprating the van to &65KG, no doubt Ant will be back on this subject Perhaps it might just be a case of replacing the rear springs. Although it is an expensive job if the van is in good condition it will be worth it. Another possibility is the fitting of spring assisters either professionally made ones from Grayston or MAD or some of those being advertised on here. Engineers report - have a look on some of the kit car sites, ask an insurance company - some of them have approved engineers.

                    Hi Alex
You are certainly having an interesting time tracing the history of your van. But let me put your mind at rest on one question, you will not be asked to leave the Roma Club. After all you bought it as a Romahome and it was a Romahome shell as shown by the build number, so welcome to the Club and we hope to see you at a rally sometime.

                      Hello Colin

Thanks for letting me stay I will get to the bottom of this and do all it takes to get my van sorted.

The van is in very good condition both inside and out, it certainly had me fooled, however, from the start I suspected something was a little strange so before I purchased the van I contacted the previous owner, she told me it was her daily
transport but it proved to be unsuitable for her husband who has Parkinson's.
I also did a vehicle check which came back clear, so I went ahead It's now my van.

I will certainly will be attending some rallies and no doubt I will be easily spotted
                      but don't

                      Cheers Alex

                              hello Ian

I am intending to come along to Kingsbury, on either sat. or sun. but not stay overnight. I have yet to sort out the gas and other matters with the van before
I start to use it properly, however, to get to meet other members would be great. You seem to have plans for various activities over the weekend,
which day and time would you suggest to be the best for me to turn up? I am free all weekend and Kingsbury is only about 20 miles from my home.
This being my first meet, I am not sure what to do, please advise me on where and how I get access to where you all will be once I get to Kingsbury.

                              Cheers Alex
